American Ginepri wastes match point after late call-up
DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - Robby Ginepri answered a late call to play for the United States in the World Team Cup and came within one point of beating Spaniard Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday.
Ginepri had been due to take part in qualifying for the French Open but discovered after practising at Roland Garros on Monday that he had secured a place in the main draw.
He received a call asking him to deputise for John Isner, who wanted to rest a sore arm, and caught a late flight over to the tournament in Duesseldorf.
"I said 'sure'," Ginepri told reporters after holding a match point at 6-5 in the final set before losing the match 6-3 5-7 7-6.
"I'm pretty happy with the way it went today. A little unfortunate I didn't come out with a victory but he's one of the better clay courters out there. So I'll take a lot of positives from this match."
American Sam Querrey defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3 6-4 to leave the United States and Spain level at 1-1.
Also in the Red Group, the Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead over Australia when Jan Hajek swept aside Peter Luczak 6-1 6-2 in just 62 minutes.
